The Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department was a result of a group of concerned Chancellor District citizens who recognized the need for fire protection closer to their residences. The group, led by Mr. Bill Pullen, met at the Chancellor Ruritian Club in mid and late 1955 and began discussions on how the new department would operate. Until the establishment of the Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department in March of 1956, the citizens had to rely on Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department as well as the neighboring fire departments in the City of Fredericksburg, Orange County and even Stafford County.

The firehouse we currently inhabit is the same building the members first placed into service in 1956. The building was built by the charter members and has very little creature comforts. It was no more than a two bay garage with enough space to store two modern for the times fire engines and little more. Over the years the station has seen many changes both inside and out. There were additions for the new bays, a kitchen was added, bathrooms and eventually bunk rooms and a dayroom were added in order to make the station able to be occupied 24 hours a day. There are plans to replace the current station within the next year at the current location.
